MYP Integrated sciences

Unit 1 - Sports and forces

Content

  • The concept of force as a push or pull
  • To represent forces in sketches that show magnitude and direction of force
  • The types of force: gravity/weight, friction, air resistance, friction in water, buoyant force, normal force, forces in sports
  • The effect of force on motion through understanding of balanced forces (no change to motion); unbalanced forces (acceleration, deceleration)
  • Acceleration and deceleration (speeding up, slowing down, going at a steady or constant speed)
  • The effect of increase or decrease of net force on motion of objects
  • The forces in sports and contribution of science to improvement of safety and performance.

Skills and understanding

  • Use the equation resultant force = mass x acceleration
  • Use the equation Gravitational force = mass x gravitational field strength
  • Interpret velocity time graphs
  • Relate changes in velocity to resultant forces.
  • Calculate net force
